Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao recently told the National Peoples Congress that corruption is the biggest threat to China and is a major thorn in their development.
US Vice President Joe Biden was on a visit to Russia, told them in plain terms that corruption was the largest limiting agent in their economic relations. He also pointed towards the recent custodial death of a Lawyer in Russia who was protesting against corruption in Police.
A large American corporation is seriously considering pulling out of Brazil, the same company that over past many years has been doing business worth several million dollars, and then what’s the problem? A series of corrupt and inexplicable court rulings that was highly expensive to the company. These rulings are seriously affecting his resolve to do business there. Brazil’s Judiciary has been termed as an untouchable corrupt system even by its former president.
The problem is not limited to small change exchanging hands and petty funds being misused but has a larger dimension to it. The corruption in developing markets has reached unbelievable limits. India’s telecom ministry recently supposedly gulped down $30 Billion from telecom deals over the past few years.
A Russian activist recently posted online document proof showing a $ 4 billion dollar scam amidst a state run company’s trans Siberian pipeline works.
China too is not far behind, a minister responsible for the new high speed rail service was accused of siphoning off $152 million, and in other unrelated news is also accused of maintaining 18 mistresses (probably to help him wisely spend the cash).
And it’s not just the economy that takes a hit but also society. It’s a big dampener for initiative and ambition. Everyone must have the same question going around in their minds, why make an effort when only money is the source of success. Authority loses its luster and hold that it once commanded. Anger and resentment start brewing, once the divide between ordinary citizen and the officially accepted thugs and crooks increases. Premier Wen’s declaration of corruption as the biggest enemy of China wasn’t about losing foreign investors but about social impact and stability. Probably the fact that corruption is one of the root causes of revolutions in Africa and Middle East must have been worrying him.
Corruption is a force to reckon with and not reconcile with. It is curable as displayed by Singapore and Hong Kong who completely eradicated corruption in a generation’s time. Reform is much needed however at cautious tone to avoid a blowback.

Finally, there is some sense of relief for those who were affected by 9/11 attacks and the aftermath that has continued over the past ten years. Now, the key terror-man is dead and the war on terror has entered the next stage. The key maize now is how Obama will take advantage of the situation and roll out new policies to support the economy.
