It was a $301 billion increase to $391 billion, which is the second largest increase in the 56-year history of the Fortune 500. The events of 2008 can be seen in the fact that several large companies had large decreases in their profits. The biggest fall came from General Motors which went from being the sixth largest company to the Fortune 500 to being the 15th largest. Exxon Mobil used to be the largest company on the Fortune 500, but in 2009 it ended up falling behind while Wal-Mart, the bargain shoppers dream, became the top company on the Fortune 500. In addition, Citigroup and American International both took big hits, losing billions in the economic crisis. Overall though, the Fortune 500 has done very well in 2009 and it is expected that the Fortune 500 will continue to increase in value.
The Fortune 500 is the benchmark for the economy. When the economy is doing well, the Fortune 500 typically is doing well. Since the Fortune 500 is doing well, we can assume that the economy is doing well. Looking at the list of companies in the top 20 of profitable companies, we can see that plenty of companies pulled in big money for revenue but many did not have huge profits. Two companies in the top 20 lost more than $1 billion and one company barely made $1 billion in profits.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
In June, with critics comparing the Gulf to Hurricane Katrina, Obama announced the “British Petroleum” oil spill the “worst environmental disaster the US has ever faced”. America’s grubby politicians, green-lobby tub-thumpers, compensation claimants and their mega-bucks lawyers went completely ballistic every night on prime-time TV. However with more than 4,000 oil wells in the Gulf, the ecosystem is used to seepage, the light oil dissipated quickly in its warm waters, and powerful currents from the enormous Mississippi Delta swept much of it away from the shore. Today the pristine beaches are back to normal but Obama’s poisonous remarks have wiped £45 billion off the value of BP, damaged millions of US and UK pensions, and wrecked the tourist trade.
